The importance and fame of gems is as much as it is in ancient times. Agni has been called "Ratnadhatamam" (earring for gems) in the world's oldest text Rigveda. Such as-  

"Agnimile Purohitam Yagyasya Devamritvijam

Hotaram Ratnadhatamam."  (Rig.)

Many ancient Sanskrit texts such as Ramayana, Mahabharata etc. also describe the properties and importance of gems. In Chanakya's Arthashastra and many policy texts, gems have been discussed in detail. In the Bible also, it has been told about gems in many places, the people of Rome were very fond of gems. Most of the gems are mineral material except for a few gems; that arise from the earth. The gems which are very beautiful, durable and rare; they come in the category of precious gems, But the gems which are available in less money; It's insignificant; it's not like that at all.

According to Indian belief, Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Emerald, Topaz, Diamond, Sapphire, Gomed and Cats-eye come under the category of Navaratnas. Apart from these, another all are Upratnas. These Navaratnas like Ruby etc. are related to the Navagrahas like Sun, Mars etc. respectively.

Divine-powers are inherent in gems, so in astrology, in order to get the auspicious results of the Navagrahas, it is instructed to wear gems according to the planet. A person should wear gems according to the rules specified in the scriptures for progress, health benefits and auspicious results in his life.
